VPS & infrastructure for running an EA 24/7

An EA only trades when MetaTrader is running and connected. A VPS keeps it online around the clock, close to your broker's server, independent of your home PC and connection. Here's what to weigh — and why the cheapest option is rarely the right one. This is a checklist, not a ranking; where TradeAquila shows partner providers, they are clearly disclosed affiliate links — never a ranking or an endorsement.

Why a VPS at all

An EA only trades while MetaTrader is running and connected.

  • A VPS keeps the terminal online 24/7, independent of your home PC, power and internet.
  • No missed entries or exits because your laptop slept, updated or lost Wi-Fi.
  • It also isolates trading from whatever else your personal machine is doing.

Latency to your broker

The single number that matters most for fast systems.

  • Pick a data-center in the same region/city as your broker's trade server (e.g. London/LD4, New York/NY4).
  • Round-trip latency to the broker matters far more than raw CPU for scalping and HFT EAs.
  • Swing and position systems are largely indifferent to a few milliseconds — no need to overpay for latency you cannot use.

Uptime & reliability

Downtime during a move is the expensive kind.

  • Look for a real uptime SLA (99.9%+), redundant power and network.
  • Automatic reboot/recovery and a way to be alerted if the terminal disconnects.
  • A provider built for trading, not a generic web host that reboots whenever it likes.

Sizing (CPU / RAM)

MetaTrader is heavier than it looks once you load it up.

  • Budget enough RAM per terminal — many charts, indicators and EAs add up quickly.
  • Run the strategy tester / optimizer on your own machine, not the trading VPS, unless you size for it.
  • Headroom matters: a box running at 100% drops ticks and lags fills.

OS & management

MT4/MT5 are Windows applications.

  • Windows VPS is the path of least resistance; Linux needs Wine and more babysitting.
  • Managed plans handle patching and restarts; unmanaged is cheaper but yours to maintain.
  • Make sure the terminal and EA auto-restart after a reboot or update.

Why $5 ≠ $35

The cheapest plan is often the most expensive once you count slippage.

  • Bargain plans are usually oversold shared boxes, far from any broker, with no real SLA.
  • The hidden cost is missed and slipped trades — which can dwarf the monthly saving.
  • A "cheap VPS" that costs you one bad fill a month can be more expensive than no VPS.
